Lindsey Vonn, 40, Makes Shock Announcement About Skiing Future

Lindsey Vonn announced on Thursday that she is coming out of retirement six years after her last Olympics with plans to rejoin the U.S. Olympic ski team at age 40.

Vonn has won three Olympic medals, including a downhill gold and a super-G bronze at the 2010 Vancouver Games. She also took a bronze medal at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, her last Olympics to date. Vonn last competed in February 2019 after a series of injuries incurred throughout her career caught up to her. In April of this year, Vonn underwent a partial knee replacement.

“My career ended with no intention of coming back,” Vonn told The New York Times last week.

But in recent months, Vonn has gotten back to training and, as of Friday, will return to the U.S. ski team. It’s unclear which races Vonn hopes to compete in. The next Winter Olympics will be held in Italy in February 2026, but the next downhill competition — Vonn’s specialty — will happen next month in Beaver Creek, CO.
