The LPGA is back! Here are 5 player storylines to follow

The LPGA’s 2020 season was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic after only four events. Now, after more than five months, the Tour is set to resume with the inaugural LPGA Drive On Championship in Toledo, Ohio. This 144-player, 54-hole event will not have spectators, a pro-am, or sponsors, but will offer a $1 million purse.

Here are five storylines to follow as the ladies return to competition:

1. Inbee Park’s resurgence: Park claimed her first victory since 2018 at February’s ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open. She has moved up to No. 11 in the world rankings and seems poised for a strong comeback.

2. Nelly Korda’s chance for the top spot: Currently ranked second in the world, Korda has the opportunity to become the third American to reach No. 1 since 2006. With three career victories and 25 top 10s since 2017, she is a strong contender.

3. Americans to watch: Five Americans are currently in the World’s Top 20: Nelly Korda (No. 2), Danielle Kang (No. 4), Lexi Thompson (No. 9), Jessica Korda (No. 17), and Lizette Salas (No. 19). Kang, in particular, has shown recent momentum with four top 3 finishes in her last five starts.

4. Jin Young Ko’s reign at the top: Ko has held the World No. 1 ranking since last July and has had a strong 2019 season with four wins and 12 top-ten finishes. It will be tough for anyone to challenge her with her current lead.

5. Lexi Thompson’s comeback: After facing personal difficulties, Thompson has had a resurgence, winning the ShopRite LPGA Classic in June and breaking into the World’s Top 10 at No. 9.

The restarted LPGA season begins on Thursday, July 31 at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Viewers can watch the action on the Golf Channel.
