Jordan Spieth has suggested that Scottie Scheffler has done something extremely uncommon after the world number one won the Olympic gold medal last week.
In the least surprising surprise twist golf has had for some time, Scottie Scheffler came from nowhere midway through the final round to go on and win the Olympic gold medal at Le Golf National.
The 28-year-old tied the course record with his 62, which included a back nine of just 29 shots. Remarkably, Scheffler beat Jon Rahm by 10 shots in the final eight holes as the Spaniard – who led by four at one stage – ended up missing out on making the podium altogether.
Rahm himself, labelled Scheffler’s round a joke. But it seems that Jordan Spieth was not at all surprised by what The Masters champion managed.
Jordan Spieth says what Scottie Scheffler did at the Olympics is so uncommon
Speaking ahead of the Wyndham Championship, Spieth picked out one moment from Scheffler’s round which stuck out to him, while he shared how difficult his comeback actually was to pull off.
“I was on the golf course, I didn’t see, I was following it, I didn’t see anything as far as afterwards, but I did see the emotion he showed on his putt on 17. He doesn’t show a ton of emotion, he doesn’t normally need to, he’s normally walking to victory, but that one was pretty cool,” he said.

“I’ve been in a position where you’ve been so far out with nine holes to go and nothing to lose, you don’t think there’s a chance and then you start to make a run or someone makes a mistake, and it’s just very uncommon that you actually end up winning the golf tournament. To go in and close that out was really incredible, and from what I’ve seen afterwards and how much that meant, I imagine I would have been feeling the exact same way. All of us would have.
“But pretty super cool, are any of us surprised? Maybe not really, but at the same time, if you were going to bet on anybody to be able to do it, he was the safest one to bet on. But that’s still something to overcome there. Those closing holes, there’s trouble on all those shots, so you can have some wedges in your hands, you can make some birdies, but at the same time, double bogeys right around the corner too as we saw.”
