Jordan Spieth was disqualified at Genesis Invitational as Scottie Scheffler had meltdown

The Genesis Invitational is one of the most highly-anticipated tournaments on the PGA Tour calendar, and while the 2025 event has been one of little drama, the 2024 tournament was anything but quiet

As the 2025 iteration of the annual golf tournament concludes at Torrey Pines South on Sunday, Mirror US Sport revisits some of the most memorable moments from last year’s event. This week’s edition of the prestigious competition has seen Patrick Rodgers climb to the top of the leaderboards after an impressive performance on San Diego’s fairways and greens.

He currently holds a one-stroke lead at -8 heading into Sunday’s final round. However, Denny McCarthy is hot on his heels, while Ludvig Aberg trails by two strokes in third place. Meanwhile, Davis Thompson, Tony Finau, Tommy Fleetwood, and Patrick Cantlay are all still vying for the trophy, but they’ll need to overcome a four-stroke deficit if they hope to emerge victorious, all while hoping that Rodgers stumbles in his final round.

While the performances have been outstanding at the event, it has been relatively drama-free compared to the excitement that unfolded at last year’s tournament. But what transpired with Spieth, Woods, and Scheffler last February that caused such a commotion?

Jordan Spieth is disqualified
Spieth experienced a first in his career, being disqualified for the very first time after 263 PGA Tour events during last year’s Genesis Invitational. The issue arose from an error on the Friday’s scorecard; he recorded a three on the par-three fourth hole when he actually shot a four, reports the Express.

Acknowledging his oversight the next day, Spieth addressed his fans on social media, saying: “Today, I signed for an incorrect scorecard and stepped out of the scoring area, after thinking I went through all procedures to make sure it was correct.

“Rules are rules, and I take full responsibility. I love this tournament and golf course as much as any on @PGATOUR so it hurts to not have a run at the weekend. Really appreciated the support in LA.”
