Phil Mickelson is currently facing potential relegation from LIV Golf due to a rule change. As the captain of the HyFlyers team, he is close to the cutoff point for relegation, sitting in 44th place ahead of the season’s final event.
LIV Golf introduced a system where players ranked below 48th face relegation, but team captains like Mickelson were previously exempt.
This exemption is now lifted for 2024, putting notable players like Mickelson at risk. If relegated, players will need to compete in qualifying events to retain their spots, although there’s a possible loophole for Mickelson due to his significant stature in the league.
Additionally, Mickelson confirmed his split with Callaway Golf earlier in 2024, ending a 20-year partnership.
This followed a series of controversies starting in 2022, after his comments about Saudi Arabia and his move to LIV Golf.
