Camila Giorgi has spoken out after she abruptly retired without any public comment and fled to the United States. The WTA had lost contact with the tennis star, who has now released a statement explaining her actions.
The 32-year-old, who reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the Olympics, was listed as a retired player on the International Tennis Integrity Agency website. This effectively removed her from the anti-doping protocols necessary for professional tennis play.
Normally, such decisions are accompanied by a public statement from players to inform their fans and reflect on their careers. But no such announcement was made by Giorgi.
Further questions were raised when the WTA reportedly couldn’t reach her after her last match against Iga Swiatek at the Miami Open on March 23. In addition to this, reports in Italy suggested Giorgi had fled the country to the United States as authorities wanted to question her over discrepancies in her tax returns, while other reports seem to suggest a new career as a midel beckoned.
Despite not commenting on speculation, Marca believes Giorgi is looking to pursue being a model. She has amassed over 732,000 followers on Instagram, where she posts modelling pictures and has her own brand called ‘Giomila’, wowing fans with snaps in her sportswear and lingerie.
