Jordan Spieth speaks about what happened to Justin Thomas at the Wyndham Championship last year

Jordan Spieth is in need of a positive week at the Wyndham Championship to ensure his PGA Tour season doesn’t finish prematurely.

The American currently sits 67th in the FedEx Cup standings. After this week’s competition, the top 70 will advance to the St. Jude Championship, which is the PGA Tour’s first playoff event.

Spieth has been suffering from a wrist issue for most of 2024 and hasn’t looked his best since the beginning of the year.

The American even made the trip to the John Deere Classic before The Open, although Spieth failed to challenge at TPC Deere Run.

Despite Lucas Glover claiming the title, the three-time major winner remembers watching Thomas push near the top end of the leaderboard 12 months ago.

Thomas needed to hole out on the 18th hole to extend his season. The two-time PGA Championship winner hit the pin and narrowly missed out on the FedEx Cup playoffs.

“I remember watching it on my phone for a bit, and then as it got close, I got to a TV for the finish,” Spieth said in his pre-tournament press conference. He had that chip on 18. It was an off-year for him, but to still battle it out like that was pretty exciting.”

Spieth added: “I think it points to what this event is capable of producing towards the end. It’s going to be a tournament to win, and that would be the focus, but you almost get to have double the excitement with guys making playoffs and getting in the top 125 and getting their jobs back through the rest of the fall.”

Jordan Spieth could be in for a dramatic week in North Carolina
With Spieth dangerously close to the FedEx Cup cut line, the American faces the real possibility of missing out on the playoffs.

The 31-year-old’s recent performance at The Open was relatively impressive. Spieth finished on five over in testing conditions at Royal Troon and will hope his performance on Scotland’s west coast is a turning point.

However, given the nature of his wrist injury and his desire to properly rectify the injury during the off-season, missing out on the playoffs could actually prove beneficial in the long term.

Whenever Spieth’s season concludes, it’s essential that he address the problem and returns 100 per cent fit for the 2025 season.
